17th Anniversary of 9-11...

17th Anniversary of 9-11...
On the 17th Anniversary of 9-11, we continue prayers for a path to peace. (Picture above - TishTrek and husband Harry @ the podium inside the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York City). It was the privilege of a lifetime for us to be with leaders from around the world on a night when honoring excellence in writing and reporting was the common language uniting all of us. As one of the proud sponsors of the Annual U.N. Correspondents' Dinner, we enjoyed honoring excellence in writing and communications by helping to fund scholarships for international university students who had the courage & talent to tackle some of the difficult issues of our time. Through their magnificent words, they successfully created content that helped readers see through the lens of their research & life experiences. These students inspired all of us. I have confidence the next generation will pick up where we leave off.

Carmie Brady Inspires a Community AGAIN!

This Weekend, TishTrek - THE JOB BLOG stops to HONOR the love of a mom gone too soon. The legacy of the beautiful and gregarious Carmie Brady lives on through the acts and deeds of her wonderful family again this weekend. Her husband - Charlie Brady - and their amazing sons transformed a dark time in their life & a devastating loss into an awe-inspiring opportunity & mission-in-motion to help strangers - connected only by a common language called "illness."

At every fundraiser, it is humbling to watch this family in action as their positive attitudes drive them to leverage their remarkable skills, competencies and determination to help seriously ill children and their heart-sick families. They inspire others at every turn.

For five hours this Sunday, with the help of anyone who can spare $20.00 and an hour of their time - this family will achieve another milestone & produce results that will live on in the lives of others forever... For another year, they will not stop until the results of this day are transformed into gifts that help children navigate their way through unimaginable circumstances. I hope you will join them.

When they started this event 3 years ago, I handed Charlie a hand-painted wooden plaque which reads, "Try to live your life with the music of a bagpiper in your heart" because his family has taught so many others to do just that. So... like a kid at Christmas, this Sunday @ Bar A in Belmar, NJ - I'll be sitting with a cold one awaiting anxiously for the annual arrival of the Pipes and Drums of the Jersey Shore, (a Tish Favorite for sure!). The music produces "that moment" which reminds all of us how blessed our community is to have "The Brady Bunch" and their Carmie's memory & legacy in our midst.

At all the Brady Bunch gatherings and fundraisers, there is a feeling in the room that is hard to describe, but I'm convinced it's the warmth of Carmie's embrace every time her incredible boys act in her name.

On the back of that same plaque I wrote, "May the bright light of your beautiful Carmie's memory warm you today & always..." Well done, Carmie. No wife could wish for more; no mom could be prouder; and some days do not gets better than this for a community. Thank you.

- Tish

Giants in Business & Life Inspired Peter Cancro!

Welcome to TishTrek - Greeting to THE JOB BLOG!

Today, we honor a guy named Peter Cancro and a repeat behavior called, LEADERSHIP!

Peter has been a friend for over 40 years... so it was delightful to read the June 4th New York Times article highlighting this remarkable man's journey in athletics, business, volunteerism and life. I have followed his story since 1974!

In the article, Peter mentions two local businessmen who influenced him - Jack Baker & Bob Hoffmann. These men were and still are giants in our community whose work ethic & commitment to customer service combined with their passion for life transformed successful businesses into iconic symbols of everything great the Jersey Shore has to offer!

As I mentioned in a previous blog, I worked for Jack Baker's Lobster Shanty for ten years which is located on the water at the foot of the Manasquan Inlet and I lived across the street from the business owned by that other great mentors in my life - Bob Hoffmann of "The" Bob Hoffmann's Ice Cream on Rt. 35 South in Pt. Pleasant Beach.

Jack and Bob delivered dreams to the kids in our community for over 50 years by teaching thousands of us to work hard, be on time, clean our work space as we worked, show up dressed appropriately & groomed for "our" clients, and to honor the customer experience every minute we were on their clock. Because of their vision, strategy, business skills, and competencies, as well as a love of fishing in Jack's case and a love of ice cream in Bob's case - they left an indelible mark on me and a generation of residents including leaders like Peter & John Cancro from Jersey Mike's Subs who would follow them. Hundreds of thousands of people enjoyed their products and services for the last 50 years! How many people have tried or enjoyed what you deliver daily for that many years?!

What was it that made these men different, special and successful? I've observed their leader behaviors and their commitment to my community forever, so I can tell you that they were winners because no one cared about excellence more, worked harder, started earlier, or stayed later when necessary than the two of them when it came to serving customers.

For 25 years, every time I jogged up Forman Avenue at 6 a.m. headed for the ocean, Bob Hoffmann would wave at me from a distance where he was weeding flowers or spraying down concrete so the quality of his homemade ice cream could compete with the welcoming exterior of his amazing store! Bob & Jack's tireless efforts to consistently ensure the quality of their products, services & facilities earned them legacies that have stood the test of time. How many of us can say that about our life's work?

Who did you watch growing up? Who were the adults in your community who taught you that hard work and commitment to others can bring success that has no bounds? Imagine working for bosses who believed it was an added benefit in "their life" to run and lead thriving businesses that helped community kids reach all their dreams and goals. Their small businesses produced job opportunities for an entire generation of families @ the Jersey Shore. Thanks to them, thousands of kids earned the funds for college or to pursue artistic dreams; others earned the money to explore the world, or open a business, buy their first car, or to get their own kids through college; some enjoyed remarkable athletic opportunities which directly enhanced who they would become. We aren't just talking about paychecks here. Their work had greater value: What these men created was a support system that propelled the potential of children forward every time they made a profit. How many of us can join Peter Cancro and say we achieved that?

In our little town, we had so many people to look up to. We had Jack and Bob, and Coach Fio from Pt. Pleasant Beach High School and so many others... Thirty years later, champions like Peter and John Cancro, TV personality Jack Ford, the Manzo and Palisi families and many others would honor these mentors by following their amazing lead.

Leadership repeats itself when it is real. Since our eyes were open, we learned that lesson in Pt. Pleasant Beach because we had examples like Jack Baker and Bob Hoffmann to follow every single day. Their values, business integrity, work ethic and passion influenced and inspired us to strive to become the best we could be. Parents always appreciated this fact because children learn what they live. Our thanks to Jack & Bob. I hope they saw Peter's article in the New York Times. He speaks for all of us who have benefited from the excellence they shared with others for decades. Thank you, gentlemen.

If you want a lift today, go to the link below. It's the June 4th New York Times Article written about my friend - Peter Cancro - The Boss, Lessons From the Sub Shop. It was written by Patricia R. Olsen. This weekend, try ordering a #2 at Jersey Mike's - You'll be supporting a village!

Trust & Integrity Starts With The Application!

Welcome to TishTrek - THE JOB BLOG!

Today's Tip: Never lie on an employment application and do not lie about your education credentials! Those of us who study and assess human behavior for a living can tell you unequivocally that if you are someone who chooses to be untruthful during your 1st introduction to any company, statistically there is a very high chance that you will be truth-challenged when you are employed with us. Because of this fact, in most cases - we will not hire you if you are caught in a certifiable lie.

FACT: Of the 350,000,000 residents in the United States, CNN reported on March 24th that adults over the age of 25 who currently possess bachelor's degrees are reported as follows:

33.6 % Whites
19.9 % Blacks
13.3% Hispanic

If you have a degree, congratulations! You have achieved a milestone and a credential that a high percentage of Americans do not have.

If you don't have a degree, don't give up because you may have achieved an "educational equivalent" which means you have secured some college credits and/or business, work, civic, military and general life experiences that gives you an "educational equivalent" that many companies will view as completely acceptable and enough knowledge in a chosen field to achieve the goals of a particular position or even an entire class of jobs inside their company, (i.e. - Microsoft's Bill Gates is one of the most famous examples!)

When you see a job requirement that reads, "This position requires a Bachelor's Degree or "Commensurate Experience" to qualify," it means that the company will allow you to compete for a position against candidates with college degrees because there is a past performance history of successful employees who have already proven that their experience gave them an "educational equivalent" along with the skills, knowledge and competencies to execute in a particular job effectively & with excellence. If others have succeeded, so can you!

Having said all this, many times over the past 20 years - employment candidates have - in fact - lied about degrees they did not possess. Every time it happens, companies are amazed & highly disappointed! In every case, the candidate was either denied an employment opportunity and/or they were released from the company in those instances where we allowed new hires to start before the background results were complete. What a terrible experience and what a terrible waste of every one's time.

The silly thing is this: In most cases, the Hiring Team's decision was not solely based on that degree the candidate claimed to have had - we were interested in a combination of assessed elements & factors such as number of years of experience, the complexity of projects they had executed, revenues secured, their leadership styles, repeat behaviors which helped them deliver with consistency & excellence, and the business benefit the person had delivered on behalf of the companies they had been accountable to.

Let's be clear: Trust starts with the employment application, so why do some candidates who have had DWI/ DUI offenses think it's okay to make conscious decisions to check the box NO when asked about such offenses on the application. When candidates explain their circumstances, there is always a very good shot that they can prevail beyond this mark on their record and secure the job. But... when the Criminal Background Check comes back and reveals false information was checked in that box, the candidate's chance of getting hired moves towards zero because he/she led with assertions that were false and therefore our trust in them and their candidacy was eliminated.

Once you lie in the employment process, all those great things you did in the past don't matter to the hiring company any more because market leaders believe that Business Integrity starts with what the employment candidate chooses to write in his/her employment application. It's as simple as that.

Who you really are has to be good enough... so go for it! Good luck!

Best regards,
Tish
